Wife’s Yaris was making bad noises this morning, and at first glance, appeared to be an anomaly. Pulled the wheel, and the outside surface of the disc was gorgeous, tons of pad left. Inside however, ugh. Related: after digging about, I found that the minimum thickness is 19mm. However, what I have not been able to find is the thickness per side. The one side is perfect, no wear whatsoever, so all of it will have to come off the backside.

also related, this is the way it came from the factory, the first time I have had the brakes off. The pins are great, some of the grease was even still that cloudy yellow of brand new. Seals around the piston look good, and so I am

surprised at the extreme uneven wear. Any thoughts? Piston is what I am thinking, I just don’t see it.

Updates. Well, for about $100, I got new pads, rotors, brake fluid, and a can of brake kleen. Turns out the Woodbridge Pepboys will turn rotors, but it was around 15 or so, if I recall correctly. I just went ahead and replaced everything.

Assuming you’re able to take the rotors off the car and bring them somewhere else in another car, most chain auto parts stores will turn rotors for you. Just call your local O’Reilly, Advance Auto Parts, AutoZone, etc and see if they offer it.

The majority of the force on the rotor is from the inside on single pot calipers. It’s not unusual to see a clean outboard pad and surface.

I wouldn’t recommend cutting them either. If all the wear is on ite inboard side it’s going to be out of spec after cutting.

Sometimes pads get hung up on the carrier slides (not the pins) because of a burr on the carrier or on the pad ear. I take a file and file the parts that touch and slide on each other. I also grease these also.

The only place around me that still does it is NAPA, and they want $25 a disc. AZ, Advance, Pep Boys, etc don’t have the equipment anymore.

Pretty much what I was afeared of... If I could figure out the thicknesses of the faces, I could trouble it out, but I am not confident in getting an accurate read on a rust-ridden rotor regardless. It was pretty striking wear difference though, and I am pretty sure that there is a problem somewhere.

You need a new rotor, and that caliper is suspect too. Replace both if you can.

Nowadays rotors are cheap. You mentioned 25 bucks a disk to turn them and they are probably 35 bucks brand new. just buy new ones and be done with it.

Turning disk is nowhere near as common as it was 15 years ago. Now it’s almost the same price to replace so no need to turn them anymore.

no, though it does look that way in the photo. It was just a little chamfered at the bottom. It actually looked darn near new.

Yeah, I just wouldn’t feel good about all the material coming off the one side to make the minimum. Going to replace the rotor.

Yeah, I used a pep boys coupon and got the discs, pads, fluid (32oz,) and a can of brake clean for about $100
